| Our mission is to photograph, document and freely provide for the use of the researching public the cemeteries of Henry County,
Tennessee and those in the surrounding area of relevance. There are over 400 cemeteries or burial sites known in the county itself. The vast majority of them are small, old family plots that are often difficult to access without detailed topographical maps or so deteriorated that they cannot be recognized at all. Together with the destructive effects of nature and neglect, the harsh reality is that we are slowly losing the tributes and monuments to our ancestors forever. We hope that by researching, finding and documenting each cemetery and then publishing the work freely on the internet, we won't lose quite so much of our heritage. Since we do not currently live in Henry County and can only try to make it there when we can, updates will be irregular. Please always check back with us often for new information. You can contribute also - information, research, photos, donations. Please read more here. If you have corrections, clarifications, comments, questions or wish to report a dead link, please by all means contact us. Please also visit our sister project site, simply titled "Archive," where we host local-interest genealogical information and sources including letters, photos, legal documents, ephemera, stationary, newspaper clippings and church records. It is our hope that it will be another source of Henry County genealogical data as well as a museum of what the past has left for us to enjoy. Thank you for your visit and please consider joining our Forum to participate in discussion with others! |

It's been way too long, again. I know. (June 2, 2009) ![]() |
| Let's see. The last newsbite was dated September 2007. Lots has happened since then, including moving, promotion, more pay,
more bills, gas hikes/panic, the replacement of my beloved Chevy Blazer with a Chevy Cobalt, having too many hobbies and not enough time
to escape to Paris for the odd weekend here and there. I really owe the users of our project a big apology and some honesty. First things first, I'm very sorry that the cemetery project has been neglected for so long. Being as I am, hobbies number too high and time flutters away too quickly with most. In addition to genealogy and historical research, I spend way too much money on ebay buying local (Paris/Henry County) ephemera and in antiquing in general. Bottle collecting, clock collecting and clock repair are also big robbers of time and money. The cemetery project has not been completely neglected since September 2007 but the website has. I have worked on the incredibly time-consuming task of re-formatting the cemetery index pages one by one, cleaning up notations and trying to add citations for facts not presented with the deceased's marker but still relevant nonetheless. We have also re-photographed some cemeteries to replace older, lower- resolution photos from the early days. The new domain, cemofhenrycotn.com, has been live for some time but sat relatively dormant. I will be making some subtle changes in the days ahead and will try to get it more incorporated as time goes on. The following is a list of goals ahead of me. Website goals: - Introduce new layout of non-listing pages. - Assign each cemetery a subdomain (cemeteryname.cemofhenrycotn.com) to centralize links back to the project from outside sources. - Possibly design new header with an image (rather than plain text) logo and incorporate search function into new header. Goals in re-listing each cemetery listing page: - Categorize vital facts, notes, relations in effort to clean up notes fields. - Evaluate origin of all facts presented and add appropriate notation. - Denote facts found on markers with a cross (...fact...†). - Denote facts found in the Compendium of Henry County Cemeteries with an asterik (...fact...*). - Denote facts found in other primary sources with source number and page number, if possible (...fact...[4/76]). - Lay out all sources at bottom of cemetery listing. - Alternate shades of lines on every other name. - Enlarge text of names. Goals in re-evaluating all photos: - Standard photo size becomes 1024x768 across the entire project. - "Stamp" all photos with new branding, including Creative Commons statement. |
